“For me, it was a decision that slowly took shape in the back of my mind for two to three years, until March 2020, when a series of events made it clear that a decision was imminent.

The truth was, after twenty years together, a natural tension had emerged between the directions Coach Belichick and I were pursuing in our careers and the trajectory of the Patriots as a franchise. This tension could only be resolved through a separation or a reassessment of our respective priorities.”

The Pivotal Moment in Brady’s Professional Journey

The prolonged tension ultimately prompted Brady to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a choice that demonstrated he still possessed significant capabilities. During his tenure with the Buccaneers, spanning over 50 games, he achieved 108 touchdown passes and concluded his inaugural season with a Super Bowl win, further cementing his legacy.

At the time of his exit, the Patriots were unable to fully leverage Brady’s talents, as their roster did not have the offensive prowess required to adequately support the experienced quarterback in the manner that Tampa Bay could.

At the forefront of his priorities were skill players, with the Buccaneers receiving high marks due to standout athletes like Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. Coaching was another vital consideration, with Tampa Bay’s Bruce Arians earning a prominent position on his list. Additionally, the weather conditions, both during games and practices, were influential factors.

Notably, financial remuneration was not a significant priority for him. “It wasn’t my top concern, likely not even in the top ten, and it certainly didn’t receive a 3 in terms of importance,” he remarked.

Reasons Why Tampa Bay Was the Optimal Selection

Ultimately, Brady opted for the Buccaneers due to their superior performance across several critical factors when compared to the Patriots. 

“Ultimately, I selected Tampa nearly five years ago because, overall, it rated higher than New England across those twenty or so criteria. It really isn’t much more complex than that.” 

Although his observations regarding the free agency process may not benefit the 2025 class of free agents—most of whom have already found their teams—they provide an intriguing insight into the thought process of one of the most thorough preparers in NFL history.
