Nico Collins reflects on the Texans’ playoff loss, saying, “We know the steps we need to take”

The Houston Texans concluded their 2024 season in a manner that has become all too familiar, facing another exit in the Divisional Round after finishing with a 10-7 record, which included a commanding victory in the wild-card round.

However, the narrative surrounding their season diverged significantly from the sentiments expressed by key players, such as wide receiver. While external observers voiced disappointment regarding the team’s performance and perceived stagnation amid rising expectations, Nico Collins remained optimistic, emphasizing the squad’s long-term potential.

Despite encountering injury challenges and an offense that failed to meet pre-season expectations, Collins expressed confidence in the Texans’ trajectory. In a recent interview on The Insiders, he discussed the team’s difficulties, the resilience they demonstrated, and the steps necessary to enhance their performance in the upcoming season.

“We know what we got to do,” Collins stated, highlighting the determination present within the locker room. “We know where we want to go, and we have the right pieces and the right coaches to help us get there. The biggest thing is we’ve just got to be healthy.”

The Obstacles of the 2024 Season

The 2024 season for the Texans was characterized by a mix of achievements and setbacks. Although they concluded the season with a commendable 10-7 record, they were unable to advance beyond the Divisional Round, succumbing to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The offense, anticipated to be a strong point following offseason signings, fell short of expectations, ranking 19th in the league in scoring, a decline of six positions from the prior year.

Injuries significantly impacted the offense’s performance, with Collins, one of the few healthy receivers by season’s end, recognizing their detrimental effect on the team’s potential. The acquisition of Stefon Diggs was intended to enhance the offense, but his season was abruptly ended by a torn ACL in Week 8, depriving the Texans of a key playmaker.

Furthermore, rookie wide receiver Tank Dell struggled to regain his explosive capabilities after suffering a broken fibula and a gunshot wound in the offseason, with a subsequent knee injury further limiting his contributions. Collins also faced challenges, having missed five games due to a hamstring injury; upon his return, he was not at his optimal performance level.

Nevertheless, he made a significant impact, recording seven catches for 122 yards and a touchdown in the wild-card win against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Nico Collins’ Development and Tenacity

Collins had a commendable season despite facing injury challenges. Prior to his injury, he recorded three games with over 100 yards in the first five weeks, with his lowest performance being 78 yards in the game where he got injured.

However, after his return in Week 11, he found it difficult to replicate those early successes, falling below the 78-yard threshold in five of his last nine games. Nevertheless, Collins displayed resilience and remained an essential part of the Texans’ offense. His development as a receiver was apparent, particularly during crucial moments in the wild-card game, showcasing his potential.

He maintained a strong rapport with quarterback C.J. Stroud, even amid the team’s offensive struggles. Collins’ determination and positive outlook for the future are bolstered by the hiring of new offensive coordinator Nick Caley.

With Caley, who previously served as the Rams’ pass game coordinator, now at the helm, Collins is hopeful that the Texans’ offense will experience significant improvement. The achievements of players like Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp in Los Angeles under Caley’s guidance have caught Collins’ attention, and he believes this could provide the necessary impetus for the offense to thrive.

An Exciting Year to Come with New Leadership

As the 2025 season approaches, Collins has conveyed his enthusiasm regarding the potential of a rejuvenated Texans offense. He remarked, “It’s gonna be a great year for us,” emphasizing the continuity of the team despite a new offensive coordinator.

Nico Collins is keen to collaborate with Caley, familiarize himself with the updated playbook, and prepare for organized team activities. With a healthy roster returning, he is confident that the Texans are set to advance.

The Texans’ offensive difficulties, especially during the playoffs, underscored the necessity for improved adjustments and more innovative play calling. Although the defense performed commendably in their defeat against Kansas City, the offense failed to seize critical opportunities, which contributed to their loss.

Entering the fourth quarter just one point behind, the Texans could not score again, with their only additional points resulting from a safety by Kansas City to run down the clock.

For Collins, the playoff defeat left a lingering disappointment. He stated, “We know what it takes. We know what we got to do to make that next jump.” While the loss was disheartening, it provided the team with essential insights into areas requiring development and enhancement.

The Way Ahead: Wellness and Development

Collins maintains a positive perspective based on several crucial elements. Primarily, the Texans’ health is essential; the injuries that affected the team in 2024 hindered their ability to perform at their best. The return of key players like Diggs and Dell to full fitness could unlock the explosive offensive potential that was anticipated. Additionally, the evolution of the offensive system is critical.

With Nick Caley as the new offensive coordinator, there is a chance to enhance the offensive strategies to align with the players’ capabilities. Caley’s background with elite wide receivers in Los Angeles may significantly benefit the Texans’ offensive performance, and Collins is optimistic about the impact of this new direction.

Lastly, Collins’ faith in the team’s chemistry and talent is steadfast, as he expressed his affection for the squad and confidence in their ability to learn from past experiences. With renewed determination and strategic adjustments, Collins envisions a promising future for the Texans.

Expert Editorial Comment

As the 2024 season concludes, the Texans are setting their sights on the future with renewed resolve. Although their playoff elimination was disappointing, the team recognizes the necessary actions to advance in their development. With Nico Collins at the forefront, a fully fit roster, and a revamped offensive strategy, the Texans possess the essential components to elevate their performance in 2025.

Collins emphasizes that the Texans have the requisite talent, mindset, and leadership to enhance their capabilities and progress in their journey. While the sting of the 2024 playoff defeat lingers, it has also ignited a drive for improvement. The path to success may present challenges, but with a dedicated team focused on growth, the Texans are well-positioned for a promising future.
