Mike McCarthy has opted not to coach in the NFL during the 2025 season, choosing instead to concentrate on the hiring cycle for 2026.

Published on

This decision follows unsuccessful contract negotiations with the Dallas Cowboys and signifies a temporary hiatus in his coaching career after four seasons with the team, as reported by NFL Network.

McCarthy’s Coaching Tenure with the Cowboys

At the age of 61, McCarthy assumed the role of head coach for the Cowboys in 2020. His initial season was marked by difficulties, culminating in a 6-10 record. However, he swiftly revitalized the team, leading them to three successive 12-5 seasons.

Despite these commendable regular-season achievements, McCarthy faced challenges in the playoffs, managing to secure only one victory in the postseason during his tenure.

The 2024 season concluded with a disappointing 7-10 record for Dallas. Contributing factors to this underwhelming performance included injuries to quarterback Dak Prescott, a lackluster running game, and a defense that struggled throughout the season.

Additionally, the departure of defensive coordinator Dan Quinn to Washington created a notable gap in the team’s structure.

Contract Expiration and Coaching Recruitment

In contrast to numerous coaching exits, Mike McCarthy was not dismissed by the Cowboys. His came to an end on January 14, 2024. The preceding day, team owner and general manager Jerry Jones announced that the parties were unable to reach a new agreement.

This situation placed McCarthy in a challenging position within the coaching market, as several teams had already initiated their interview processes.

Subsequent to his exit, the Cowboys opted to elevate offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to the position of head coach, thereby maintaining continuity in leadership within the organization.

Interest from Other Teams

McCarthy continued to be a highly regarded candidate during the coaching search. He had an interview with the Chicago Bears, who ultimately chose to hire Ben Johnson instead.

The New Orleans Saints also showed interest in McCarthy; however, their request for an interview reportedly did not come to fruition before he opted to withdraw from the hiring process. At present, the Saints are the sole team with an opening for a head coach, as all other franchises have completed their hiring.

McCarthy’s Coaching Records & Legacy

Prior to his tenure with the Cowboys, McCarthy enjoyed a remarkably successful period with the Green Bay Packers from 2006 to 2018. During his time at the helm, the Packers achieved a record of 125 wins, 77 losses, and 2 ties, culminating in a Super Bowl XLV championship against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2011 season.

Over the course of 18 seasons as a head coach in the NFL, McCarthy has guided his teams to the playoffs on 12 occasions. His total of 174 regular-season victories places him 13th on the all-time list and third among currently active coaches, surpassed only by Andy Reid (273) and Mike Tomlin (183).

What Lies Ahead for McCarthy?

As Mike McCarthy plans to step away from coaching in 2025, he is expected to take this opportunity to reflect and prepare for potential roles in 2026.

Given his extensive experience and proven success, he is likely to remain a prime candidate for franchises in search of an accomplished coach. By strategically pausing his coaching career, McCarthy may position himself advantageously for a prominent coaching opportunity upon his return to the field.
