Fred Warner Believes 49ers Defense Can Return to ‘Dominant’ Ways Under Robert Saleh

The San Francisco 49ers are restructuring their coaching staff, and the return of a well-known figure has generated enthusiasm among key players. Robert Saleh, the previous defensive coordinator for the 49ers, is rejoining the team, much to the delight of All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner. Following a difficult 2024 season for the 49ers defense, Saleh’s return instills optimism that the unit can regain its former strength.

Fred Warner Reflects on Saleh’s Impact

Fred Warner, one of the three representatives from the 49ers at the 2025 Pro Bowl Games in Orlando, expressed his views on the return of Saleh and the future prospects for the defense. Drafted by the 49ers in 2018, Warner quickly emerged as a defensive leader, attributing much of his early growth to Saleh’s mentorship during his formative years.

Warner emphasized the importance of Saleh’s return, stating, “It means a lot,” as reported by NBC Sports Bay Area’s Jennifer Lee Chan. He acknowledged Saleh’s significant influence on his development as a young player and noted the unique experience of now being a veteran alongside him.

Warner’s enthusiasm underscores the profound impact Saleh had on his career, and his confidence in Saleh’s ability to revitalize the defense resonates with many within the 49ers organization.

In 2024, challenges include defense issues and coaching changes

In 2024, the 49ers defense, despite a strong lineup, faced challenges under defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen. Although the unit achieved an eighth-place ranking in opponent yards per game at 317.4, it faltered in other vital metrics, notably ranking 29th in opponent points per game.

This underwhelming performance prompted the organization to terminate Sorensen’s contract after just one season.

The shift in defensive leadership signaled the 49ers’ intent to revamp their strategy. The team swiftly reappointed Robert Saleh, whose prior success with the organization instilled optimism that he could revitalize the defense and restore its former prowess.

Robert Saleh’s Tenure in New York

Saleh’s initial period with the 49ers was characterized by notable achievements, as the defense emerged as one of the most formidable units in the league during his tenure as defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2020. Following his departure from San Francisco, he assumed the head coaching position with the New York Jets in 2021, a role he maintained until the middle of the 2024 season.

Despite his leadership, the Jets faced challenges early in the 2024 season, recording a 2-3 record before his dismissal. Nevertheless, Saleh’s time with the Jets included significant accomplishments, particularly in enhancing the team’s pass defense, which ranked first in the league for passing yards allowed per game in both 2022 and 2023, conceding an average of just 178.9 yards. His success in transforming New York’s defense into a top-tier unit was a major factor in the 49ers’ interest in bringing him back.

Although his head coaching stint in New York concluded earlier than anticipated, Saleh’s defensive expertise remained highly regarded, leading to interviews for head coaching positions with various teams, including the Dallas Cowboys, Las Vegas Raiders, and Jacksonville Jaguars. Ultimately, he chose to return to the 49ers, reuniting with Warner and a defense poised for a resurgence.

The Journey to Supremacy: Warner’s Confidence in Saleh

Fred Warner is well-acquainted with the weight of expectations. As a highly regarded linebacker in the NFL, he has consistently improved his performance and is optimistic that the return of Saleh will similarly enhance the entire 49ers defense. Despite facing challenges in 2024, including injuries that affected the team’s performance, Warner believes that the 49ers can recover under Saleh’s guidance.

Warner emphasized the need to return to a dominant form, stating that achieving this will require significant effort and dedication, but he is confident in their capabilities. His assurance stems from Saleh’s previous successes, during which the 49ers established themselves as a formidable defensive unit known for their aggressive and dynamic playstyle. This identity positioned them as Super Bowl contenders, and Warner is convinced that such success is within reach once more.

The key to revitalizing the defense lies not only in Saleh’s return but also in the collective commitment of the entire unit. With a roster featuring talented players like Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead, and Warner himself, the 49ers possess the essential elements to reclaim their status as one of the premier defenses in the NFL.

Future Prospects: Saleh’s Return to the 49ers

As the 49ers prepare for the 2025 season, revitalizing their defense will be a primary objective. The organization is optimistic that Saleh’s return will restore the defensive stability that previously propelled them to the Super Bowl. Addressing critical challenges, particularly in limiting opponents’ scoring, will be essential following the vulnerabilities displayed in 2024.

Saleh’s defensive strategy, which prioritizes discipline, speed, and aggression, was instrumental in enhancing the 49ers’ defense during his initial tenure. Collaborating with Warner and the defensive squad, Saleh will focus on refining their tactics, reducing errors, and maximizing each player’s potential. Warner’s on-field leadership and familiarity with Saleh’s methods will be crucial in facilitating the defense’s adaptation and execution of the game plan.

Can the 49ers restore their defensive identity?

The critical inquiry is whether the 49ers can regain their former dominance. Following a challenging 2024 season marked by injuries, there are concerns about the defense’s ability to return to its prior excellence. However, the team possesses a solid foundation, featuring a skilled roster and a coach with a track record of transforming defenses into elite units.

While Warner expresses optimism, the defense must commit to hard work and maintain consistency throughout the season. The reappointment of Saleh represents a significant advancement, yet the overall success hinges on each defensive player’s capacity to perform at their peak. For Warner, the objective is unequivocal: to restore the formidable defense that has long characterized the 49ers’ identity.

Expert Editorial Comment

As the 49ers aim to strengthen their defense for the 2025 season, the reappointment of Robert Saleh as defensive coordinator instills optimism and enthusiasm. Fred Warner‘s confidence in the defense’s potential to reclaim its former strength under Saleh’s leadership is encouraging for the organization. Through dedication, discipline, and the combined leadership of Saleh and Warner, the 49ers have the opportunity to restore their defense to a formidable state, positioning the team for a competitive resurgence in the NFC.
