Cooper Kupp Signs with Seahawks on a 3-Year, $45 Million Contract

Published on

Cooper Kupp has officially joined the Seattle Seahawks on a three-year contract worth $45 million, enhancing their wide receiver lineup with a highly skilled playmaker.

This move is part of the Seahawks‘ strategic efforts to revamp their roster as they prepare for the upcoming seasons. Kupp’s arrival not only bolsters the team’s receiving capabilities but also represents a return to his roots, as he was raised in Washington.

Kupp’s Return to His Roots

Hailing from Yakima, Washington, Cooper’s  is making  a return to his home state, where he first gained recognition while playing college football at Eastern Washington University. Drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in 2017, Kupp quickly established himself as one of the league’s top wide receivers.

However, after eight successful seasons with the Rams, he was released at the beginning of the 2025 league year, paving the way for his signing with the Seahawks.

The Necessity of Kupp for the Seahawks

This offseason, the Seahawks’ receiving corps experienced considerable transformations. The team released Tyler Lockett and traded DK Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers, creating a substantial void in their offensive structure.

In light of these departures, the arrival of C.Kupp is timely, as he brings a wealth of experience and remarkable playmaking skills to Seattle.

Kupp’s Notable Career Achievements

Cooper Kupp’s career has been marked by numerous accolades. Among his most significant accomplishments are:

– Securing the NFL receiving triple crown in 2021 by leading the league in receptions (145), receiving yards (1,947), and receiving touchdowns (16).

– Being honored as the NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 2021.

– Earning the title of Super Bowl LVI MVP, where he recorded eight receptions for 92 yards and two touchdowns, contributing to the Rams’ victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.

– Accumulating a career total of 634 receptions, 7,776 receiving yards, and 58 touchdowns.

Recent Injury Challenges

Despite his remarkable achievements, Cooper  has encountered injury challenges over the past three seasons. Since 2021, he has participated in only 33 games. In the 2024 season, he played in 12 games, achieving 67 receptions for 710 yards and six touchdowns.

These injuries significantly influenced the Rams’ decision to release him, as they aimed to create salary cap space and revamp their roster.

Seattle’s Offensive Transformation

The Seattle Seahawks’ management has taken bold steps to revamp their roster. Recently, they traded their starting quarterback, Geno Smith, to the Las Vegas Raiders and brought in Sam Darnold to take his place.

Additionally, the team has secured the services of Marquez Valdes-Scantling on a one-year deal worth up to $5.5 million, alongside the acquisition of C. Kupp. Kupp will team up with Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who distinguished himself as Seattle’s leading receiver in 2024 with 1,130 yards, creating a promising tandem.

Financial Considerations of the Agreement

Cooper Kupp contract with the Seahawks is set at $45 million over three years, underscoring his value as a premier receiver despite recent injury setbacks. Although this agreement is considerably less than his former $80.1 million extension with the Rams, it still marks him as a significant asset for Seattle’s future.

The arrangement also grants the Seahawks flexibility in addressing potential injury issues while ensuring they have a top-notch receiver on their roster.

The Value Kupp Adds to Seattle

Cooper’s  offers the Seahawks more than just exceptional receiving skills. His experience and leadership will be crucial for a team in the midst of considerable change. Some of the notable attributes he contributes include:

Exceptional Route Running:C. Kupp is recognized for his ability to create separation and exploit weaknesses in defensive coverages.

Dependable Hands: He has consistently been one of the most reliable targets in the league throughout his career.

Adaptability: C. Kupp excels in both slot and outside roles, making him a versatile asset for Seattle’s revamped offensive strategy.

How Kupp Integrates into Seattle’s New Offense

With the introduction of quarterback Sam Darnold, the Seahawks will require a dependable receiver to facilitate this transition. Cooper’s   is anticipated to become a primary target during crucial moments, particularly on third downs and within the red zone.

Head coach Mike Macdonald and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb are expected to craft plays that leverage Kupp’s skill set to take advantage of defensive mismatches.

Implications for Seattle’s Future

The Seahawks are currently navigating a transitional phase, yet the acquisition of C. Kupp demonstrates their commitment to remaining competitive. While some may interpret this as a rebuilding effort, Seattle is strategically positioning itself to maintain relevance in the NFC West.

Should Kupp maintain his health and sustain his elite performance, he could be instrumental in guiding the Seahawks toward the playoffs and potentially a significant postseason journey.

Expert Editorial Comment

The signing of Cooper Kupp by Seattle represents a transformative decision that benefits both the player and the organization. It enables Kupp to advance his career in his home state while providing the Seahawks with a seasoned, high-impact receiver.

As the 2025 season draws near, attention will be focused on Seattle’s restructured offense to assess Kupp’s integration into the new system. If past performance is any indication, the Seahawks have secured a player capable of delivering both immediate and enduring contributions.
